Getting started

This guide will take you from initial installation to migrating your first database change in four easy steps.

If you have not already downloaded Advancor Database Compare, download it here. Simply run the downloaded SetupAdvancorDatabaseCompare.exe and the application will install and run immediately.

Step 1: Connect to your database server

Navigate to the Project tab:

  • In the Server text box, type the name of the database server. Type localhost if your database server is running on your local machine.
  • Either provide a username and password or tick the Logon With my Windows Account checkbox to use your Windows credentials.
  • Click Connect to logon to the database server.

If successful, you should see a list of databases below the Connect button. On the left side, you usually choose the newest database that you want to move to another database.

  • On the left side, choose the database you want to compare from.

Choose the right-side database in the same way. On the right side, you usually choose the database you want to change.

  • On the right side, choose the database you want to change.

Step 2: Script a change

Advancor Database Compare starts loading and comparing the schema as soon as you have selected a database on both sides.

  • Switch to the Schema tab to show the results.
  • On the left pane, in the Schema Explorer you can review the differences. Click on a row to show a diff for that item.

  • Select one or many items in the Schema Explorer and click the Script… button at the top in the Schema Explorer.
  • A new Script tab is displayed that contains a SQL script.

Step 3: Test a change

Always review the script before test or execution. Also note that Test will fail to work properly and may make permanent changes to the target database if there are more commit than begin transaction statements.

  • Click the Test All button to test the full script in the code pane (or the Test Selection button if want to test the selected text only)

The script will execute in a transaction that is then immediately rolled back. See the Execution Result pane for results.

At this point, you can edit and add code in the script window and test the changes as you go without actually making any permanent change to the target database.

Step 4: Apply change

When you have reviewed the script, it’s time to apply the changes to the target database.

  • Click the Run All button
  • If successfully, the compare will update immediately. Switch to the Schema tab and in this case there are no longer any Table changes:

  • If you like to view identical items in the Schema Explorer, click the fourth filter button:
